Born in 1946 in Birmingham, Alabama, Judy Winn is the proud daughter of Nelda and Jim Anderson. After graduating from Shades Valley High School in 1964, Judy attended the Mississippi University for Women, obtaining her bachelor’s in elementary education in 1968.
Following her passion for serving others, Judy began her teaching career in Huntsville, Alabama, where she met the love of her life, Army 1st Lieutenant Stephen R. Winn, while stationed at Redstone Arsenal Army Base. A love story that began on a blind date, Judy and Steve married in 1969, the start of a loving fifty-five year and climbing union committed to family and serving their community and others in need.
Shortly after their marriage and Steve’s fulfillment of his commitment to the U.S. Army, the young couple relocated to Miami, Florida, where they became the adoring parents of three children: Michelle, Leslie, and Jason. Not long after the birth of their son Jason, the family relocated to Tallahassee, Florida, falling in love with the community, a place they have called home since 1974.
Continuing her passion for education, Judy was Co-Director of the Temple Israel Pre-School for forty-one years. Dedicated to helping people, Judy served as President on the Board of Directors for Brehon House, an organization supporting pregnant and homeless women in the community, offering safe housing, access to education, medical care, and childcare. Since its founding in 1992, Brehon House has assisted more than 500 women and children. Today, her daughter Michelle follows in Judy’s footsteps, serving as a member of the Board of Directors.
Judy is committed to ensuring atrocities suffered by the Jewish people at the hands of the NAZI regime during the Holocaust are not forgotten, volunteering with the Holocaust Education Resource Council (HERC) and serving on the Board of Directors. HERC is dedicated to expanding Holocaust teaching in the Leon School system.
Judy is also a supporter of Florida State University athletics. She serves as a member of the FSU Extra Point Club, raising funds for student athletic programs.
Today, Judy continues serving others, helping where she can, and assisting people. A doting grandmother, Judy enjoys spending time with her nine grandchildren, attending school-related activities, and instilling in them the importance of service to one’s community and individuals in need.
